Tokyo: signal, data and getting around
Japan, covered by 44 Japan plans from $0.60.

Quick answer
A Talisim Japan eSIM works in Tokyo: 44 plans from $0.60, 100MB–50GB, up to 3G, 4G, 5G, on networks including NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile, KDDI/au. Top-ups: yes, on most plans. Data only: no phone number, calls or texts. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and iMessage work over data. Hotspot and tethering work, as far as your phone allows, and use the same data.
Where the signal goes
Every subway line has signal in the tunnels as well as the stations. The weak spots are deep inside the big stations, Shinjuku and Tokyo Station especially, where it drops between levels.
Getting around
iPhones can add Suica or PASMO to Apple Wallet. Most Android phones bought abroad can't, so get a card at the airport. Trains stop around midnight; taxis after that are expensive.
Neighbourhoods
Shinjuku
Golden Gai's tiny bars, and a free view from the government building.
Asakusa
Old temple district. Senso-ji is quiet before eight.
Shimokitazawa
Vintage clothes and small venues, close to Shibuya.
What's on
Cherry blossom
Late March to early April
Ueno Park, the Meguro River, Shinjuku Gyoen
Ueno fills up by mid-morning. Shinjuku Gyoen bans alcohol and is calmer.
Sumida River Fireworks
Last Saturday of July

Around a million people. Trains near Asakusa are packed for hours afterwards.
